#9 - English's Final Game.

By Michael Kennedy

Over the ten days leading up to February 23, 2020, we will highlight some of the greatest moments of Carl English's tenure with the St. John's Edge.

Carl English has seen more than his fair share of adversity. In fact, if you ask Carl, it's that adversity that has shaped him into the man he is today. The 2018/2019 NBL Canada season was one filled with sky-high expectations but also packed with turmoil for the St. John's Edge, especially English. On May 13th, 2019, St. John's were preparing for game three of the NBLC Finals versus the Moncton Magic. Down 0-2 in the series, after a pair of frustrating losses on the road, the Edge were back home at Mile One Centre.

English had a reputation for his tenacious, 'never surrender' attitude. He had played through injuries on countless occasions. In typical English fashion, with the team and city on his back, the hometown hero battled all night to deliver a gritty stat line of 22 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists highlighted by 5-8 shooting from outside. But it would come at a cost. An MRI in the coming days would reveal that Carl finished the game on a torn quadriceps and he would be placed on IR prior to game four, the eventual series ender.

It may not have been the fairytale ending he wanted but Carl finished his career on the basketball court how he had always faced it…Soaked in blood, sweat and tears with dogged tenacity in the face of adversity.
