St. John’s, NL – The St. John’s Edge announced today that Steve Marcus will return to the team as the Head Coach for the 2019-2020 season.
Marcus, a Springfield, MA native, has been with the St. John’s Edge since the inaugural season. In that season, the 2014 graduate of St. Bonaventure University established himself as a leader and advocate for basketball in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Last year, he returned to the team as the Associate Head Coach. With two regular season games remaining Marcus was named Interim Head Coach. In that role, Steve would lead the Edge to their first NBLC Finals appearance in franchise history.
“I am beyond excited to be back in St. John’s and lead the St. John’s Edge.” Said Marcus, “St. John’s has become home for me these last few years and I am looking forward to putting together a championship level roster not only on the court but also off the court and in the community.”
Marcus began his coaching career during the 2014 season as the Assistant Director of Basketball Operations with the Maine Red Claws, the NBA D-League affiliate of the Boston Celtics. Throughout his two years with the Red Claws, the team would post a 65-35 record, which at the time was the best two year run of any team in D-League History. Marcus was instrumental in the NBA call ups of Chris Babb, Coty Clarke and Tim Frazier.
After the completion of the 2016 season, Marcus would head south to Raleigh, North Carolina and join Mark Gottfried’s staff at NC State University. Marcus worked closely with 2017 NBA lottery pick (9th overall – Dallas Mavericks) Dennis Smith Jr. in his lone season at NC State.
“I would like to thank ownership for this opportunity, I am excited to get back to St. John’s and start building a championship roster and culture that the great people of St. John’s deserve.”
